SUMMER INSTITUTE IN ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY

The second Summer Institute in Economic Geography will take place in
Bristol, England, July 11-16, 2003.

This will be an intensive, week-long residential programme of
activities designed to develop an in-depth understanding of the innovatory
developments and continuing challenges in this diverse and fast-moving field. The
meeting will feature plenary contributions from a number of internationally
renowned economic geographers.


The Summer Institute will provide an opportunity to investigate
leading-edge theoretical, methodological, and research-practice issues in the field
of economic geography (broadly defined), along with a range of associated
professional and career development matters. This international
meeting will be specifically designed to meet the needs of new researchers in
economic geography, taking the form of an interactive workshop for
25-35 participants. Please note that the number of places is limited.
Topics for the meeting will include: locating the boundaries of “economic
geography,” qualitative research in economic geography, challenges of
policy-oriented work in economic geography, and grant-writing and publishing in
economic geography.

Open to doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, and recently
appointed junior staff/ faculty from around the world (normally within 3 years of
appointment following a PhD), the Summer Institute will comprise an
intensive, week-long residential program of activities designed to
develop an in-depth understanding of the innovatory developments and continuing
challenges in this diverse and fast-moving field. The meeting will
feature plenary and small group contributions for the entire week from

There will also be contributions from guest speakers during the week.

All those wishing to attend the conference, or wishing to apply for
financial support, must complete a pre-registration form by February 14
2004. Although the details of financial support are still being
finalized, there may be a _small_ Institute participation fee.

The Economic and Social Research Council is supporting the Summer
Institute under its ‘Research Methods’ programme and will provide subsidised
places to certain eligible candidates and is paying the core speakers' costs.

Additionally, there are a of Summer Institute Fellowships are available
(which make a contribution towards participation fees, travel, and
accommodation costs). These sponsored places will include support
earmarked for participants travelling from outside the privileged countries of
the world.

Applicants are encouraged to identify their own sources of funding,
where available.

University of Bristol’s School of Geographical Sciences in July 2004, after which
the intention is to convene meetings on a bi-annual basis.

Curso Práctico "PROYECTOS FINANCIADOS POR ORGANISMOS INTERNACIONALES".

Les comunicamos que Escuela de Gestión Pública, bajo la dirección académica de la Escuela de Proyectos Internacionales, ha programado para los próximos días 18, 19 y 20 de febrero, en la sede del Grupo Analistas, en Madrid, el Curso Práctico "PROYECTOS FINANCIADOS POR ORGANISMOS INTERNACIONALES". El objetivo del curso es formar a profesionales y personal de organismos públicos y privados, en la práctica de la licitación, preparación y gestión de proyectos de consultoría y servicios para Instituciones Internacionales dedicadas al desarrollo institucional.

El curso será eminentemente práctico y orientado al aprendizaje y práctica de la preparación de expresiones de interés, consorcios, propuestas, informes de progreso y finales y presentaciones de proyectos. Se formarán grupos que simularan la preparación y ejecución de proyectos.

Diversidad y convivencia en las ciudades (5&6 Febrero Barcelona)
La sociedad contemporánea ha convertido nuestros pueblos y ciudades en espacios abiertos que albergan realidades complejas y dinámicas. Los ayuntamientos, como institución pública más cercana a la ciudadanía, deben poder solucionar conflictos para los cuales no siempre disponen de los recursos adecuados. La articulación de la diversidad y la convivencia en las ciudades es un reto para las democracias modernas que ha adquirido una relevancia fundamental en la política y la gestión municipal, hasta el extremo de convertirse en protagonista cotidiano de la atención mediática. La inmigración y los procesos de exclusión que siguen determinados colectivos son dos problemáticas que deben enfrentarse sin complejos.

La propuesta de este seminario parte del análisis de conceptos y situaciones para plantear después diferentes opciones de actuación política. Pretendemos reflexionar sosegada y profundamente sobre mecanismos que hagan posible que la articulación de la diferencia deje de ser considerada una fuente de conflicto y pase a ser un valor añadido de nuestros municipios.
