INTERNSHIP I: ASSISTANT, SUSTAINABLE PROCUREMENT


The European Secretariat of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability offers an internship within its Sustainable Procurement Team.

The intern will be part of a multidisciplinary team working on the promotion of the use of environmental and other sustainability criteria in public procurement.

The internship is especially interesting for all those who wish to later work in international organisations or within local governments and their associations.


DATE/DURATION: Six months, start between 21 June and 12 July 2004


TASKS AND OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE:

- Networking: Administration of "Buy it green"-Network of sustainable procurement professionals (BIG-Net) including answering requests for interest, maintaining database and mailing lists

- Market research for the development of joint procurement activities in Europe

- Conference organisation: Support the Sustainable Procurment Team in developing and organising logistics and programme of the European BIG- Net Expert Seminar, 14-15 October 2004, Aix-en-Provence

- Development: Contribute to the development of the recently launched
Procura+ Sustainable Procurement Campaign

- General office support, filing, communication with external partners, minutes writing, summaries, etc.


SKILLS REQUIRED:

- Education: Academic degree in a relevant field, experience in editing will be an advantage

- Experience in political work, e.g. in local politics, NGOs, trade unions or other social commitment, and with environmental product characteristcs and/or European market research.

- Computing: Use of MS Office, databases, e-mail and www; experience in web editing, desk top publishing and/or graphics software will be an advantage

- Organisational skills: High communicative competence (orally and in writing), ability to work self-organised within a complex team

- Languages: very good English (orally and in writing), further European language(s) an asset



INTERNSHIP II: CONFERENCE ASSISTANT AT ICLEI'S INTERNATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE (ITC)


ICLEI's International Training Centre (ITC) offers an internship for a university student or a recent university graduate looking for international work experience in the field of urban sustainability and training. The internship offers a wide range of activities, mainly connected with international communication, programme planning, internet-based announcements, conference assistance and logistics. The internship will focus on the programme preparation of several conferences on "greening events", "Eco Profit" and other issues within urban sustainability.

The internship is especially interesting for all those who wish to later work in international organisations, local authorities and their associations, consultancies for local authorities and training institutions.


DATE/DURATION: Six months, start June or July


TASKS AND OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE:

- Sharing ITC team meetings and general information

- Support the ITC in different working areas, according to the needs of the teams working on conferences and/or training projects

- Being responsible for certain areas defined in the team, including intensive contacts to outside (speakers, participants etc.), logistics and organisational support, etc.

- Being involved in concept writing for project development and proposal writing/acquisition of funds

- Sharing responsibility for project databases as core instruments for planning (including data entries and use of data)

- Support the further development of training approaches

- General office support for filing, letter writing, communication with external partners, minutes writing, summaries, etc.


SKILLS REQUIRED

- Education: Student or recent graduate of education science, urban or regional planning, town planning, political science, administrative science, sociology, geography, or other relevant field

- Computing: Word for Windows, use of databases, experience with e- mail and www

- Organisational skills: High communicative competence (orally and in writing), precision and ability to be self-organised within a complex team

- Languages: very good English (orally and in writing), further European language(s), preferably good Spanish and/or French and/or Italian and/or German (orally and in writing)

- Previous experiences in an international organisation, local authority, NGO, etc. are welcome but no precondition



CONDITIONS FOR ALL INTERNSHIPS AT THE ICLEI EUROPEAN SECRETARIAT:

- ICLEI offers interns a gross salary of Euro 620, i.e. about Euro 480 after tax and social insurance fees (room rents in Freiburg start around Euro 200 per month)

- Place of work: ICLEI European Secretariat, Freiburg, Germany

- Workings hours: 40/week, six weeks of paid leave per annum (i.e. three weeks for six months internship)

- Working language: English

- Applicants MUST, for legal reasons, hold EU citizenship or valid EU resident permit. Applications not meeting this condition can unfortunately not be considered
